Cyclists tackle Chile’s stunning coastal routes through Paredones, Laguna Torca, and Lake Vichuquén

On September 14, gravel cycling enthusiasts from around the world gathered in Chile for the much-anticipated Saga Gravel Race, marking the first time the Gravel Earth Series touched South American soil. The race, part of the prestigious international circuit that includes 20 events across 13 countries, showcased the rugged beauty of Chile’s coastal landscapes, with participants tackling epic routes through Paredones, the Laguna Torca National Reserve, and Lake Vichuquén.

Cyclists were given the opportunity to choose from three race distances – 150K, 100K, or 60K – with the 150K course counting toward the Gravel Earth Series standings, offering 750 points to the winners in both the men’s and women’s categories. This scenic yet challenging course tested riders’ agility and endurance, as they navigated the diverse terrain of the O’Higgins and Maule regions.

In the men’s race, Chilean rider Francisco Kostsakis dominated with a commanding performance, crossing the finish line in 5h03m33s. His competitors, including Patricio Farías (Chile) and Alonso Gamero (Peru), battled for second place, with Farías narrowly securing the runner-up spot in a thrilling sprint finish. Both riders finished more than 15 minutes behind Kostsakis.

The women’s race saw an all-Chilean podium, with Aranza Villalón claiming victory in 6h13m06s. Daniela Carrera finished five minutes behind to take second place, while Verena Hormann rounded out the top three in a strong showing for local talent.

Beyond the competition, participants were treated to a vibrant atmosphere at the event’s Base Camp, where they enjoyed the warmth of the gravel community, local culture, and Chilean cuisine. The Saga Gravel Race was more than just a test of endurance; it was an opportunity to experience the essence of gravel riding at its finest.

As the third-to-last event in the 2024 Gravel Earth Series, the Chilean race left riders and fans eagerly anticipating the final two events: Falling Leaves Lahti in Finland and the Gravel Earth Final, which will crown this year’s champions on October 12-13 in Ranxo Gravel, Catalonia. The overall standings will be determined by riders’ top two performances from the season combined with their result in the grand final.

The Saga Gravel Race reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the authentic values of gravel cycling, a sport that continues to capture the hearts of adventurers worldwide. Gravel enthusiasts left Chile with unforgettable memories and a deep appreciation for the community-driven spirit that defines this unique discipline.
